David Dougherty

Senior Associate | Tampa

David Dougherty is a Senior Associate in Butler’s Tampa office. He practices in the appellate field with a focus on first-party and third-party claims as well as extra-contractual matters in state and federal court.

David is a fourth-generation Tampa, Florida, native. David’s interest in the legal profession was influenced early on by his mother, who worked for 35 years as a paralegal.  He graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. David attended the University of Dayton School of Law as a Presidential Scholarship Recipient and graduated with his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 2003. While in law school, he competed in the National Moot Court Competition in Bankruptcy Law and was a member of the Hispanic Law Association and the Cyberspace Law Association. David gained practical legal experience through several internships, including work with criminal defense and intellectual property law firms and at the State Attorney’s Office in the Juvenile and Misdemeanor Divisions.

Prior to joining Butler, David led a large Staff Counsel operation for a national insurance carrier in Florida, specializing in first-party automobile insurance litigation, appellate strategy, and statewide litigation management. He has more than 20 years of experience in first-party automobile insurance litigation, including Florida first-party insurance matters related to Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage and Comprehensive coverage.

David is a member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association and the Jesuit Bar Association.
