Michael J. Berkowitz is an Associate at Butler. Michael works in our Tampa office and practices in First-Party Property Coverage.

Michael earned his Bachelor of Science in Managerial Law and Public Policy, with a Minor in Psychology, from Syracuse University in 2001. Michael continued his education at the Syracuse University College of Law, where
he earned his Juris Doctor in 2004.

During his time in law school, Michael served as a Faculty Research Assistant for the Director of Children’s Rights and Family Law Clinic and for a Contracts Professor. Michael also received a Family Law and Social Policy Certificate. While an Undergraduate student, Michael was a Faculty Research Assistant for a Psychology Professor, a member of the University Judicial Board, and a member of the Chancellor’s Commission on Substance Abuse Prevention and Campus Security.

Prior to joining Butler, Michael served the citizens of the State of Florida as an Assistant State Attorney in the Tenth Judicial Circuit for over four years. As a misdemeanor and felony line attorney, he handled thousands of cases, including Manslaughter, Drug Trafficking, Robbery with a Firearm, Arson, and various other violent and non-violent felonies. Michael also litigated over thirty jury and bench trials during his time as an Assistant State Attorney.

Michael also served the citizens of the State of Florida as a Senior Attorney with Children’s Legal Services (Florida Department of Children and Families) from 2008 until 2018. He handled hundreds of cases throughout all stages of dependency and termination of parental rights litigation. Michael tried over twenty bench trials. Michael was also awarded with a Leadership Award for Establishing the Tenth Judicial Circuit Human Trafficking Task Force.

Michael began his legal career as Certified Legal Intern in 2004, and then as an Assistant Public Defender in 2005, with the Office of the Public Defender in the Tenth Judicial Circuit. Michael defended his clients’ Constitutional Rights under the United States and Florida Constitutions. Michael tried over thirty jury and bench trials.

While also practicing as an Attorney, Michael was an Adjunct Instructor at Everest University – Lakeland Campus from 2007 until 2012. He taught classes in numerous legal areas, and served as a Faculty Program Advisory Committee member.
