Senior Associate | Tallahassee

Charles “CJ” Dewrell is a Senior Associate with the Tallahassee office and joined Butler in 2018. He practices in Third-Party Liability and First-Party Property actions. This includes advising insurers with regard to complex Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith issues.

CJ was born in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Florida State University College of Law in 2012. While in law school, he obtained approval from the Florida Supreme Court and worked as a Certified Legal Intern with the State Attorney’s Office in Tallahassee. During this experience, he actually completed his first jury trial as “first chair” prior to graduating law school.

Upon graduation and passing the Florida Bar exam, CJ was immediately promoted from his internship to a full-time Assistant State Attorney position in Tallahassee. While working as a state prosecutor, he litigated hundreds of criminal cases in both county and circuit court, ranging from juvenile and misdemeanor crimes to violent felony offenses.

Most recently, CJ was the Deputy Chief Attorney for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (“DBPR”), Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering. Within this role he expanded his litigation experience to include complex administrative matters before the Division of Administrative Hearings and also worked as in-house counsel to the Director of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.

During his spare time, CJ enjoys trips back home to the Gulf Coast, FSU Football, and date nights with his daughter, Madelyn.
