Nicholas Van Valen is a Senior Associate and is based out of Butler’s Tampa office. Nicholas’s current legal practice primarily includes first-party property and casualty defense matters. His vast litigation background has equipped him to handle all matters expeditiously while providing exceptional guidance and service to his clients.
Nicholas received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 from the University of Victoria, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Two years later, he enrolled at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC, Canada, a suburb of Vancouver, and completed a second Bachelors of Arts, majoring in Economics.
Nicholas studied at Quinnipiac University School of Law and was invited to the staff of the Connecticut Probate Law Journal, graduating with his Juris Doctor in 1993.
In 1994, Nicholas was admitted to the Florida Bar and started his legal career by working at the Public Defender’s Office in Miami. During his six years of service in Miami, he was lead or co-counsel in over 50 criminal jury trials, ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies, before entering the private sector.
Following his transition to the private sector, Nicholas has been lead or co-counsel in approximately 25 jury trials, in state and federal court, and has litigated writs on appeal. He has been lead or co-counsel in several jury trials involving wind and sinkhole claims, and has extensive experience in insurance coverage issues.
Nicholas is licensed to practice in all Florida State Courts and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Southern and Middle Districts of Florida.
