LG Electronics Dehumidifier Recall

September 15, 2011

The link below is a recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) announcing a recall of certain LG Electronics dehumidifiers. Specific models and serial numbers for the recalled product are listed on the CPSC website at the link below. LG Electronics Tianjin Appliance Co. has received reports of multiple home fires causing damages in excess of $1 Million reportedly as a result of fires caused by LG Electronics dehumidifiers. The recall relates to approximately 98,000 dehumidifiers. The power connector for the dehumidifier’s compressor can short circuit, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers and their property. The dehumidifiers were first recalled in December 2009 following eleven incidents, including four significant fires. According to the CPSC website, only two percent of the 98,000 consumers who purchased these units have received a free repair, which means that consumers and their property remain at serious risk.

This recall presents a potential avenue of recovery about which subrogation professionals should be aware when evaluating fires in residential and commercial losses.
